UK Woman Receives Reply To Job Application After 48 Years
A 70-year-old woman from Gedney Hill, Lincolnshire, has finally solved the mystery of why her application for her dream job as a motorcycle stunt rider in 1976 went unanswered.
Tizi Hodson, a lifelong daredevil, recently received her original job application letter—48 years after it had been stuck behind a post office drawer.
Ms. Hodson, who applied for the position in January 1976, was stunned when she opened her mail and discovered the letter, accompanied by a handwritten note that read: “Late delivery by Staines Post Office. Found behind a draw [sic]. Only about 50 years late.”
For decades, she had wondered why her application had been ignored, and now the mystery had been solved. “I always wondered why I never heard back about the job. Now I know why,” she said to BBC.
Despite the setback, the lost letter didn’t stop Ms. Hodson from pursuing a high-octane career. She went on to travel the world, taking on a variety of adventurous roles, from snake handler and horse whisperer to aerobatic pilot and flying instructor.
Reflecting on her life, she expressed amazement at how the letter found its way back to her after all these years. “How they found me when I’ve moved house 50-odd times, and even moved countries four or five times, is a mystery,” she said.
Her memory of applying for the job remains crystal clear. “I remember very clearly sitting in my flat in London typing the letter,” she recalled. “Every day I looked for my post, but there was nothing there, and I was so disappointed because I really, really wanted to be a stunt rider on a motorcycle.”
In her letter, Ms. Hodson was careful not to reveal her gender, fearing it might hurt her chances of getting the job. “I was very careful not to let people who were advertising for a stunt rider know that I was female, or I thought I would have had no chance of even getting an interview,” she said. She even added a bold statement: “I didn’t mind how many bones I might break as I was used to it.”
Looking back on her incredible life, Ms. Hodson has no regrets. “If I could speak to my younger self, I would tell her to go and do everything I’ve done. I’ve had such a wonderful time in life, even if I have broken a few bones.”
The return of the lost letter has been a fitting reminder of her daring spirit and adventurous journey, which has taken her to places and experiences she never could have imagined at the time she wrote it.
