EasyJet Flight Makes Emergency Landing After Bag Of Vapes Explode
An EasyJet flight carrying 236 passengers faced a terrifying emergency shortly after takeoff from Heraklion, Greece, bound for London Gatwick. The incident occurred when a suspected bag of vapes exploded, leading to panic and a rapid evacuation on the runway.
Eyewitness accounts describe a chaotic scene as reports of “popping noises and smoke” filled the cabin. One passenger recalled seeing “a very large red flash and flame followed by thick black smoke,” igniting fears among those onboard. As panic set in, some passengers shouted “bomb,” prompting an urgent rush to the exits.
Witnesses reported that fire and acrid smoke billowed from the bag, with explosive sounds adding to the alarm. A British woman was seen waving her vape as smoke began to emanate from it, further escalating the situation.
Authorities believe the explosion was caused by a power bank and e-cigarettes inside a passenger’s bag. Fortunately, despite the intensity of the incident, there were no serious injuries reported. One passenger sustained a minor friction burn while using the evacuation slide.
Emergency services responded promptly, ensuring the safety of all passengers. Following a thorough investigation, the aircraft was cleared for re-entry, allowing passengers to retrieve their belongings. Police were also dispatched to the scene to investigate the incident.
In a statement, EasyJet confirmed that flight EZY8216 was evacuated due to a fire in a passenger’s cabin bag. The airline assured that all protocols were followed, and that passengers were being cared for in the terminal. A replacement aircraft and crew were arranged to transport customers home later that day. EasyJet emphasized that safety remains their highest priority.
