Woman facing assault with a weapon charge over a fight with water gun
A Simcoe, Ontario woman is facing an assault with a weapon charge following an unusual dispute involving a child’s water gun. Wendy Washik, 58, was arrested by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) on Sunday, September 1, after an investigation into the incident.
According to OPP, the altercation occurred when Washik, who was attending a party, was playing with a child and accidentally sprayed a neighbor with water from the toy.
Despite Washik’s apologies, the neighbor called the police, leading to her arrest. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
Washik maintains that the water gun, no larger than from her elbow to the tip of her finger, was used in a playful manner. She claims that the neighbor reacted angrily and refused to accept her apologies. Washik noted that police did not ask to see the water gun or question her about the details of the incident.
OPP spokesperson Const. Andrew Gamble declined to comment on the specifics of the case, citing it as inappropriate to discuss further details.
Washik, an educational assistant with the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board, has been placed on leave pending the outcome of her case, which is scheduled for September 24.
She expressed understanding about her work situation but noted the financial and emotional strain on her family. Her daughter has initiated a fundraising campaign to help cover her legal expenses.
Washik expressed her surprise at the support she has received from the community during this challenging time.
