Man Flees Courtroom With Wife On His Back To Avoid Divorce
A recent incident in a Sichuan courtroom has raised significant concerns about the handling of domestic violence cases in China. During divorce proceedings, Li forcibly carried his wife, Chen, out of the courtroom in a dramatic attempt to avoid their separation.
According to reports from the South China Morning Post, Chen had filed for divorce after enduring 20 years of marriage marked by domestic violence and her husband’s aggression when intoxicated.
The couple, who have two sons and a daughter, initially faced a setback when the court denied Chen’s divorce request, citing a “deep emotional bond” and Li’s apparent reluctance to end the marriage.
Chen’s appeal led to a second trial, where tensions escalated. During this session, Li, overwhelmed with emotion, lifted Chen off the floor and fled the courtroom, leaving her screaming for help. Court bailiffs quickly intervened, reprimanding him for his actions.
In a written apology submitted later, Li expressed regret for his behavior, acknowledging his emotional agitation and the seriousness of his mistake. “I mistakenly thought I was about to divorce the appellant, so I carried her out of the courtroom,” he stated. He assured the court that he would not repeat such extreme actions.
Surprisingly, despite her initial allegations and the dramatic courtroom incident, Chen decided not to proceed with the divorce. This choice has sparked a wave of concern and criticism online, with many questioning the court’s understanding of domestic violence and the legal system’s overall handling of such cases.
