Cat lost in Yellowstone travels almost 900 miles to reunite with family 2 months later
Benny and Susanne Anguiano, a couple from Salinas, California, were recently reunited with their beloved cat, Rayne Beau, after he went missing during a trip to Yellowstone National Park. The heartwarming reunion came two months after Rayne Beau disappeared, and after the cat somehow made an extraordinary journey almost 900 miles back to California.
The Anguianos lost Rayne Beau during a June trip to Yellowstone. While they were enjoying their time in the park, the normally calm house cat was spooked by something in the woods and bolted into the dense forest. Distraught, the couple spent the rest of their trip searching for him, hoping that Rayne Beau would return. They even laid out his favorite toys and treats to try and lure him back.
Despite their best efforts, Rayne Beau remained missing, and the couple faced a grim reality. A Yellowstone employee warned them that a pack of coyotes had attacked a small dog nearby, suggesting the odds of their cat surviving the night were slim. Heartbroken, the Anguianos were forced to leave Yellowstone without their furry friend.
“That was the hardest day because I felt like I was abandoning him,” Susanne said in an interview.
As they left the park, however, Susanne saw a pair of double rainbows. To her, this was a sign not to give up hope for Rayne Beau’s return. Sixty days later, her faith was rewarded.
The Anguianos received a message from PetWatch, the pet microchip registry, informing them that Rayne Beau had been found. Astonishingly, he was in a shelter in Roseville, California—almost 900 miles from where he was lost. A local woman had found the cat wandering alone in the street and, recognizing he was likely a pet, turned him in.
The long journey had taken its toll on Rayne Beau. The cat had lost nearly six pounds, dropping from 14 to just 8. “He was really depleted,” Susanne said. “He probably didn’t have a lot of energy to go further.”
Despite the weight loss, Rayne Beau was safe and sound, and the couple was overjoyed to bring him home on August 4th. Now reunited with his twin sister, Rayne Beau is on the mend, spending his days regaining his strength and enjoying his well-deserved catnaps.
The Anguianos are still mystified by their cat’s journey and how he managed to find his way back home. But for now, they’re simply grateful that their courageous feline is back where he belongs.
