Baby pygmy hippo Moo Deng is Thailand’s latest online sensation. But her keeper is worried about her fame
At just two months old, Moo Deng, a pygmy hippo with pinkish cheeks and an endearing personality, has captured the hearts of millions online and is drawing large crowds to the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand.
The pint-sized hippo’s charm has made her a social media star, with clips of her daily antics—eating grapes, rolling on the floor, and enjoying a dip under the Thai sun—gaining widespread attention.
Moo Deng’s popularity soared after her keepers began sharing moments from her life on social media. Videos of her playfully chewing on her handlers’ knees during shower time have particularly captivated viewers, amassing millions of views.
According to Narongwit Chodchoy, the zoo director, it is Moo Deng’s natural cuteness and playful behavior that are driving the increased interest and a notable 30% rise in visitor numbers.
However, Moo Deng’s newfound fame has also led to some challenges. The zoo has encountered issues with visitors behaving inappropriately, such as pouring water on Moo Deng or throwing objects at her.
In response, the zoo has issued a warning to tourists, urging them to respect the young hippo and promising legal action against anyone who causes harm.
Despite these concerns, Moo Deng continues to enjoy significant online fame. Her name, which means “bouncy pig” in Thai, was chosen by a popular vote among 20,000 Facebook users in August, reflecting her growing presence both online and in the real world.
As Moo Deng remains a beloved figure, the Khao Kheow Open Zoo is working to ensure that her stardom is a positive experience for both her and her many admirers.
