Jealous Husband In Japan Arrested After Making 100 Calls Daily To Wife From Private Number

In a troubling case from Japan, a man was arrested for making over 100 silent phone calls daily to his wife, which he maintained for several weeks during July and August. This peculiar behavior caught public attention, as the woman, a 31-year-old from Hyogo prefecture, reported the unsettling experience to the police after enduring numerous blank calls, according to the South China Morning Post.

Initially, the woman confided in her husband about the disturbing calls, but his indifferent response left her feeling frustrated. A pivotal moment occurred when she noticed that the calls ceased whenever her husband was engaged in activities like sleeping, gaming, or spending time with her. This observation prompted her to investigate further. While shopping together, she carefully monitored her husband’s actions and realized the calls stopped entirely when he wasn’t using his phone.

Upon confirming her suspicions, she reported the situation to the authorities. The police conducted an investigation that revealed the husband was behind the mysterious silent calls, which he had made using private numbers to hide his identity. Notably, the couple appeared to have a harmonious relationship, with no known issues reported.

However, motives for the husband’s actions surfaced during the investigation. His behavior stemmed from jealousy and possessiveness, triggered by a past incident where he saw his wife conversing with another man. Feeling threatened, he resorted to making silent calls as a form of emotional punishment, despite claiming he “loved her so much.”

In Japan, the law addresses causing significant emotional distress through nuisance phone calls, classifying it as a criminal offense. Penalties include up to one year in prison or fines reaching 1 million yen (approximately US$7,000), alongside potential prohibition orders.

On September 4, authorities arrested the husband, taking him into custody. As he awaits sentencing, this incident has sparked a national dialogue in Japan, with many advocating for increased awareness and action against emotional harassment and domestic abuse.
