Passenger walks out on wing of parked plane in Mexico after waiting nearly five hours for take off
In a recent incident at Mexico City International Airport, a man took an unconventional step by opening an emergency exit and walking onto the wing of a parked plane awaiting take-off. The airport, in a statement issued on Friday, confirmed the incident and revealed that the individual was subsequently handed over to the police.
Passengers experienced a delay on Thursday morning as the scheduled takeoff of the flight from Mexico International Airport at 8:45 a.m. was hindered by maintenance issues, as reported by the BBC.
Frustration among passengers escalated as they were made to endure a four-hour delay without ventilation or water, as indicated by a written statement signed by dozens of fellow travelers.
“The passengers were unhappy and one of them opened the emergency door and stepped out on the wing,” an incident report filed with airport authorities said, according to ABC News. “This event required the plane to be changed.”
Photos of the statement, posted online, conveyed passengers’ sentiments that the man’s actions were taken “to protect everyone, with the support of everyone.”
The airport said in a statement: “Yesterday a passenger on a flight to Guatemala opened an emergency door on a plane while it was stationary at a remote position, stood on a wing and then re-entered the cabin, without affecting the aircraft or anyone else.”
“In line with international security regulations, this person turned himself over to the authorities,” it said.
Approximately 77 passengers aboard AeroMexico’s flight to Guatemala, identified as AM672, signed the handwritten statement, which gained attention on social media. An incident report filed with airport authorities largely substantiated the passengers’ account.
Despite the incident, the airport authorities have not disclosed the man’s identity and have refrained from commenting on whether he is still in custody or faces charges. Flight tracking sites confirmed the delay of flight AM672 to Guatemala City, lasting four hours and 56 minutes on Thursday.
A video recorded aboard the flight captured scenes of passengers fanning themselves and requesting water from a flight attendant, highlighting the challenging conditions experienced during the extended delay.
